I acked this patch too soon, There is another place that sets the
mode to absolute:
in wcmDevSwitchModeCall of wcmXComand.c:
/* Pad is always in absolute mode.*/
if (IsPad(priv))
return (mode == Absolute) ? Success : XI_BadMode;
