The first set actually are the bulk of aol's 3LDs -- they
seem to be domain names generated for dialup users that are dynamically
allocated as people dial in. Notice that they just are algorithmic
mappings of the IP address. Notice too, from the figures below,
that the figures are by hosts, not number of domains, and that by far
the largest portion of the "hosts" are on on aols "ipt.aol.com".
Note further that "hosts" is an incorrect term -- "IP address" is
the correct term -- they have absolutely no way of detecting
interfaces with multiple IP addresses...
The same is true for uunet and most of the other large ISPs -- they
do not, contrary to the myth you are perpetrating, serve as public
registries of large numbers of domain names -- they are simply
naming IP addresses on their own networks.
This example also illustrates why there is some necessity for
technical clue in DNS policy, and also that many of the most vocal
participants simply don't have that clue.
