+ EU to Allow ISPs to Cache Copyrighted Data COMPUTERGRAM INTERNATIONAL: MAY 24 1999 SECTION: INTERNET Internet Editor: Nick Patience ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) The European Union has decided to allow the caching of copyrighted data by internet service providers, in the latest stage in the development of its Draft Directive on Copyright in the Information Society. The European Commission said Friday it would not implement the recommendations made by the EU Parliament February which called, after heavy lobbying by the music industry, for a ban on ISPs caching intellectual property without prior permission from the copyright holder. In a statement, an EC spokesperson said that this requirement "would have seriously hindered the effective operation of the internet."
