Slowly but surely getting there. If I deal with php, mysql, etc I would have moved it already. But busy with other things, unfortunately. I have mentioned that to the Dan the website/wiki admin. He was ok with me taking over DNS today. I am not trying to insult anyone or be on some power trip taking over things from people who have been volunteering their resources and time. As we both have time we will look to discuss and move over the wiki. > --------------------------------------------------------------------- > > Same physical machine or are these on virtual machines and separate > hardware? Just curious. I have provided a dedicated physical machine for the LUG. Its nothing special and not sure xen will run on it atm. There were some bugs in the hypervisor some time back which prevented such. Now I contemplated doing it on a virtual machine as part of my virtualized production network. But I want to keep it as separate from my business stuff as possible. Most likely mail and web will just be running on the single dedicated machine for a period of time. I do not think it make sense for them to be in their own virtual machines. If anything two virtual machines in different locations or something. Both providing all services etc. But my priority is redundancy, fail over, etc for my production network before anything I am donating to the LUG. > We're the Linux group... we should perhaps be showcasing some of the > fine Linux products that are out there for failover, redundancy, etc., > which includes Tim's suggestion of Nagios or BB. Hey if others want to donate the resources and their time. I am all for it and have tons of suggestions and ideas myself. I barely got all my stuff virtualized and still have more to do there. Which is a priority and where I make my living, but still lacking the time for all that. > I have some hardware and bandwidth available. But do you have the time? For example take Gentoo, there are tons of resources, but only a handful of admins. Most stuff falls on one core admin. Hardware and bandwidth rarely are the limiting factor with technology. It most always comes down to man power. At this time bandwidth is surely not a limiting factor being in Peak10. I also have space in my rack for any donated hardware for the LUG. But at this time, rather not have any hardware I do not own in my rack. At one point I did inquire with Peak10 about them hosting stuff for the LUG. But its just easier at this time for me to handle it and not get them involved. Not sure they would be willing to offer such at this time anyway. > I'll be happy to provide some sort of service. Volunteer your time? Thats really the limiting factor of it all, more than anything else. > Think about how we as a 'group' can use some of the modern marvels > that are available in Linux and it's services for avoiding any sort of > downtime in the future. Let me just state this loud and clear for all to understand. All of the problems the LUG has experienced are due to lack of time. No amount of technical solution will be good enough, if we do not have the time or man power to implement such, much less keep it maintained and running. > Maybe a dedicated meeting on this subject is in order for those that > have resources and time available? My thought process right now is how I myself can look to sustain things as I do for my business and clients. From there if we as a group can come together do anything from there that would be great. But we don't even have a topic for upcoming meetings, and much other stuff going on. There is only so much I can do on my own. I love the whole lets do this as a group, team etc, idealism. But in reality we as a group haven't been able to pull of much of anything for quite a while. I am doing pretty much all I can, beyond that, no clue. But nothing is stopping others from doing the stuff I am. Only reason I am doing it is because others did not. -- William L.
