Python, in my, as well as most other's opinion, the best language to
start in. It is what I started in and is so fun, powerful and quite
easy. It is also one of the best gateways to other languages including
coding languages, not just scripting.

As far as apps go, python can be used with JavaScript and ruby to
create rich web or cloud apps.
