Thanks!  I didn't get your note until this morning, so I'll have to
wait until the next round to include its times in the benchmark post.

As time permits, I'll also start putting versions (including your
second one) that use alternate data storage algorithms into the
running.

This is fun, but I can't let it compete with my day job ;-), so it
may take me a while to catch up to all the proposed variations.
