I just want to say that I really strongly dislike links that open in a new window, other than to deliberately confuse the average user I can see no good reason for making them. BTW, I'm talking about things like offsite links and adds that spawn new windows, not popups for image enlargements and such, however I believe that they should be avoided as much as possible also.

To add my 2¢ ...

I say that I think well designed and executed popups are a great enhancement to the user experience … there is nothing I hate more than losing my pathway because I wanted to check out some ancilliary information on a site. As always, it comes down to the way something is executed, and as such I think it is prhaps premature to write off functionality so generally.

With good design, good use of standards, popups can be terrific.
