You can keep your transparency in 8-bit PNGs, too... its indexed
transparency just like in GIFs, but you do, as you say, get a smaller
filesize for your trouble.

I've searched, but info is either old or confusingly written.

As would be the browsers that don't support 8 bit PNGs :-)
