I think that 6 seconds it's the maximum time that the homepage should take to download. But that's dependend of you audience. If many of your clients use 56Kbps modem connection then 300KB is huge. If they all use T1 or even better then 300KB is average.
I tend to use by reference 50kb for each page, total!

Try to give a thumbnail of your images and then a link to the full version.

With GZIP switched on in the server I imagine that this will be reduced fairly substantially (we have some huge stylesheets that will compress well).
