I don’t think that’s been explicitly defined; however, it’s not unusual for
them to require you to be at the latest SP to update to the next version. Also,
SP2 fixes a whole load of things and R2 thereafter if you are entitled to it
(remember that R2 is not free and you can’t just go to it unless you have SA or
purchased it as R2) and both are fairly painless. There have been very few
issues reported with the actual upgrade (other than some minor OSD issues
mainly related to folks not updating their boot images) and it goes fairly
quick. Thus, going to SP2 in the near term is still a good idea.

Probably too early to know but I’ll ask anyway – I’m currently preparing an
upgrade plan to get us from 2012 SP1 to 2012 R2 SP1. Do we know what the
supported upgrade paths will be to the new ConfigMgr? I’ll postpone our plans
if we can go straight from 2012 SP1 to the new version.

Daniel.

Does anyone know if this is just SCCM or if it’s the trend all the System
Center products are going to? I admin all of them except SCSM at my company.

Yeah, this all ties back to that post I made a month or so back where I was
trying, w/o violating NDA , to give you all a head’s up that things were gonna
start flying fast and furious, and “be prepared”, get your labs in shape for a
rapid release cycle…. Now you can see “why”

Well, shucks. I was hoping we’d be able to keep 2012R2 around for a little
while as we just got that in place earlier this year.
Thanks.

This is all good information. Have we seen anything on how the next version of
Windows Server will be managed, will we be able to manage it (patching, etc.)
through Config Manager 2012R2 or will we need to upgrade to “the New
Configuration Manager” to get that support?

Rod's post is probably the most concise and it's what I've sent to managers.
