For Microsoft patches, always review c:\windows\WindowsUpdate.log. I am not
sure I have ever found a patch that I could get installed after reviewing that
log.

For 3rd party, review the application installer logs. Sometimes you may need a
'clean' tool to remove corrupt installs and remnants before a new version will
install. This would all be product specific though.

Subject: [mssms] Patches that just won't install

I'm curious to see what folks are doing in the cases where patches just won't
install. I have a number of vulnerabilities in my environment that are at the
point where a good number of devices don't take the update. This includes 3rd
party and Microsoft. I'm having issues with 6 updates and looking for some
guidance on how people are dealing with the obscure patches that require
registry modifications, or DLL replacements, etc.

Does anyone have a step by step process they use for narrowing down the root
cause for these issues? Any tips and tricks for forcing a patch to install?
Re-image isn't an option. [&#X1f60a]

Thanks,

Brian M.
