Could you point me in the direction of the install for Solution Generator for
64-bit then? As I was under the impression it is part of the VSeWSS
installation which basically won't run on 64bit machine.

Ok - still not a reason to use 64bit. The solution generator can work on 64bit
machines. Just don't use the extensions.

I've just found it easier building the list and adding the content types,
views, workflows and general configuration (versioning etc.) and then reverse
engineering it usimg the Solution Generator. Found the schema.xml code very
complexed (especially the <Views> section).

are you talking about the solution generator (which comes with the VseWSS, but
is not part of the extensions) or are you talking about creating a list
definition project?

For a list definition project, I much prefer to start with a copy of the
"Custom List" folder, and import it into a WSPBuilder project. You can even
easily make a template out of that in visual studio.

Out of interest Isahi, what method do you use to generate the schema.xml and
newform.aspx etc.? The open source tools I've used just didn't seem to gererate
working files that would deploy properly (e.g. New button didn't work etc.).

I'd argue that you really shouldn't make the decision based on the VSeWSS
support. Really, VSeWSS in its current version just plain sucks. I don't
recommend using it. The next version may improve, and those improvements may
well include support for 64bit, but for now my recommendation is not to use the
extensions. Use WSPBuilder or STSDEV or other community tools.
Worst case - install a 32bit vpc for the things you cant do without in VSeWSS
(I can't imagine what those will be though).

Yeah, it's really not worth losing the functionality in VSeWSS, especially for
generating the List Template definitions (and schemas) with Solution Generator!
Those things are a pain to cut by hand!

Thanks Sezai - good to know that it's not a deal-breaker.

I've worked on projects where all our DEV environments are 32-bit but the
production environment is 64-bit and this has caused no issues. You can develop
the same Features+Solutions in a 32-bit environment and they should deploy fine
to a 64-bit environment. I've also backed up sites from 32-bit farms and
restored to 64-bit farms with no problems at all.

Subject: [OzMOSS] 64-bit versus 32-bit for MOSS Environments

I'm looking for some advice on MOSS 2007 server environments and how it might
effect development.

The Microsoft Best Practices for SharePoint Server
(http://technet.microsoft.com/en-au/library/cc850694.aspx) recommend a 64-bit
architecture throughout, which is fine. I'm concerned about support for
developer tools in a 64-bit environment. AFAIK, VSeWSS still doesn't work on a
64-bit O/S. Are there any other gotchas that I should be aware of?

Thanks,
David.
