I found the suggestions for introductions and conclusions in the following link 
helpful for my students.  Like Bill, the writer suggests not writing the intro 
first, but rather drafting or at least planning the essay.  The link below 
offeres a whole system for writing a 5 paragraph essay, but if you click on 
step 6 introduction and step 7 conclusion, your kids can clearly see how the 
two differ from and relate to each other.  The components of each are discussed 
with examples and there are 4-5 ideas for different types"grabbers"  to start 
the intro and 4-5 ideas for the "clincher" to end the conclusion.  Many 
examples are included.  I used this as an exploratory exercise and supplemented 
with examples of my own.  The kids came up with some fabulous intros and 
conclusions that brought their ideas full circle.
