Carolyn,
I'd like to suggest that a "Read-Aloud" and "reading out loud" are
two different things. The former is part of a Balanced Literacy
Program in which the teacher uses the Read-Aloud to focus students in
on a particular reading strategy. During the Read-aloud the teacher
uses a text that is above students own reading level but models
explicitly the use of a particular strategy (for example, Asking
Questions, Making a connection etc). I suggest teachers turn their
reading out loud time into a something useful that would have kids
focused. I gave my students sticky notes or had them use their
journal and would give them a task to engage them while I read. I
would pause frequently to allow time to write. The important part of
any reading out loud situation is the talk after the reading. Let it
be known that I am not a killjoy! I highly value "Reading out loud"
to my students and often tell them to bask in the joy of simply
listening with no task at all. They know the difference and I tell
them, I am a teacher and it is my job to help them be better readers.
Another point of note is that we often feel that novels are the way to
go with kids of this age (my fave: Freak the Mighty). It may be true
that a good novel is a fabulous thing, however, I would also point out
that reading a magazine article, poem, website, or even "reading" a
photograph is valuable. It's about the talk and we need to engage
students in meaningful talk by exploring other literacies.
Thanks for listening,
Alison

I will be teaching this same population in the fall for the first
time - when you read these books as a "read alouds" do each of your
students have a copy of the book, or do they just listen? I have a
very limited budget to buy books. Looking in our storage room, we
have enough copies of Hatchet, Holes, Where the Red Fern Grows -
however, I like some of your suggestions .... any thoughts on
reading and having students just listen? Many thanks, Carolyn

I also work with students who read below grade level and I've found
that Hidden Talents by David Lubar is always a hit, with the boys in
particular. The Girls by Amy Goldman Ross usually gets middle
school girls hooked right away. We've also enjoyed the Cay and The
Outsiders, both of which lead to some thought provoking discussions.
=) Enjoy!

I will be teaching students in grades 7 and 8 that are reading below
grade
level. These are also students who do not find reading enjoyable.
I am
looking for recommendations of books with a lot of adventure and
action. Books
that the kids can't put down. I do a lot of the reading aloud with
lots of
discussion so books can be on grade level. Any suggestions?

Dear Pat,
I would suggest "Alabama Moon," one of the "Hatchet" books, "Bud Not
Buddy,"
"Freak the Mighty," "Surviving the Applewhites," the Percy Jackson
series,
"Graveyard Book," and (if it's not too violent for your taste)
"Hunger Games,"
which didn't spend longer than 15 minutes on my shelf at any point
last year.
