Brian and I have been chatting on IRC, and here are our suggestions:
We note that the current naturalearth dataset has topological errors
which may be an issue for some of the applications on OSGeo-Live.
It will be good to have naturalearth's quality assurance process
improved such that these errors are removed before they release, but I
expect that will take time to put in place, and we want to lock down
OSGeo-Live for this release.
I understand that Brian has been able to clean up the dataset. What I
suggest is that we put this cleaned dataset on download.osgeo.org
(keeping the same layer names), and bump the version number of the data.
Eg: 1.3.1 or 1.3osgeolive1
By the time we are working on the osgeolive5.0 release, I hope that we
can work with the naturalearth team to improve their QA process so that
the naturalearth dataset is topologically correct.
Nathan, how does that sound to you?

Hi All-
I ran a set of tables through st_MakeValid() last night, and was
reminded of all the numerous, tiny gotcha's that come up
when moving data around. The LiveDVD had just gone 'beta', which means
not so much thrashing about and changing
things.. put these two together...
Perhaps the least impact thing I can do right now, is to make a
single SQL job that loads the new, cleaned tables,
and their geometry_columns attributes, builds indexes and such, and
stow that on downloads.osgeo.org somewhere.
Then when the LiveDVD script runs, the Natural_Earth shp files are
downloaded as they were before, but this new
SQL job is run last. As far as naming, an example is "10m_ocean" ->
c10m_ocean. I will leave the new ne_ prefix
for the authoritative Natural Earth set.
The end result would be the same set of tables and shape files, and
a new set tables that are clean, next to them.
A README type addendum somewhere, and we have something for this point
release..
