I just use the car/flight adapter plugs.

One problem I wish to avoid is RF interference. It was a problem on my last boat when i was using a small inverter to power the computer. If i wanted to use the HF radio the whistles and humms were bothersome and at times overpowered weak signals.

I believe that most auto adapters are small inverters, if you plug the brick into them, and voltage multipliers if you go directly to the computer from them. Both are electrically noisy. One specification that is lacking on any of the inverters and voltage multipliers I have looked at was RF output. One would hope the better ones have less of it.

Thanks to all who took part in this enlightening discussion. This is what I have learned.
Pure DC is rarely so. And when it is not it can be destructive.
My reluctance to use an inverter is based upon a false assumption.
DC-DC power supplies are less efficient than a well designed "pure sine wave" inverter.
Only to the ignorant and the deeply enlightened are all things simple.
The simple solution for a man of my profound ignorance and addiction to technology is to use the 600w pure sine wave inverter I have already installed. If RF is a problem, deal with it with chokes and shielding as necessary.

Thank you all.
