I believe you have things backwards.

My take is that  hybrid cars have electric traction motors and the gas
motor simply supplies electricity to the motors when needed.

Diesel-electric railroad locomotives do not use batteries for propulsion.
The diesel motor drives an alternator whose output is rectified into DC
which is fed to the traction motors.

I just sent a email to for confirmation, but I believe that the new solar
cruiser does just like the hybrid cars, runs the diesel to supply
electricity to run the propulsion electric motors when the battery power is
not enough.
