A better way to do this is to use diodes to 
rectify the incoming voltage of either positive or 
negative polarity and send it to either one relay 
coil or the other of a relay as needed.
You would still have one wire but always have a 
voltage to the relay when it is sent.
The method you describe would result in the relay 
failing to operate properly.-Ken
