But the tubes were much more of that reason.

I know that. Even when they are running, many IC's 
use so little power it is nothing to worry about. 
A good example is the IC I use in my LED lights, 
it uses between 2-3 ma when running.

But it is also true that for the layman relays are 
easier to understand, easier to repair, and easier
