Last year we did go up the Potomac to DC. Anchored across the river from Mt
Vernon and enjoyed the tour of Georges house.

Anchored in the cove near GangPlank Marina but dinghied in to the Washington
Yacht Club, the northernmost marina to the bridge. I think it was about
$15/day for dinghy dock. Safe, with locked dock door and a packet of goodies,
and a bar and a Thai restaurant upstairs. Next door was a wonderful outdoor
fish market with fresh and cooked goodies. Walking distance to the mall with
Smithsonian and other museums.

We absolutely loved the museums.

The only down side was an atmosphere of menace from the blacks. Some
threatening blacks at the supermarket and a black cop who aggressively accosted
Jan for taking a photo of a statue outside an office building. He wanted to
steal her very expensive camera but Jan turned on the charm and showed him that
she deleted the picture. We didn't stay long after that but we did love the
museums. Hide your camera or take a throwaway.

Wow! Great stuff! Thanks, Charles. If any more come to mind, please let us
know. We're determined to avoid marinas as much as possible.

If we discover other good anchorages on our own, we'll let the list know about
them.
