Hey Sweet 'bella & All,

Love Boot Key Harbor and it has been
my hailing port and hub for over six years.
Of course most of you know that.

The City of Marathon, especially with
level-headed people like its Harbormaster
Richard Tanner, has come up with a fine
way to deal with unattended as well as,
but different than abandoned vessels.

If you are leaving your boat unattended for more
than "Xx" number of days you notify
the Harbormaster you will be gone and
inform him of who in the Harbor is
caring for your boat in your absence. Name,
phone number, you know... and it works.
I'ts the way we all have been doing things
for years and no doubt many for decades.

Who wouldn't do it? I want someone to
look to see if my waterline is visible! Ha.

Those who don't care to put someone in
charge of their boat or notify others they
will be gone (no numbers, no name, no
hello, goodbye, nada) have, in essence,
abandoned their boats and deserve whatever happens.

No one will even notice until the abandoned
boat saws through its lines and is free
willy all over the Harbor. Everyone in the
Harbor knows which boats are truly derelict
and a danger.

Since the winds will blow and some don't
care, thus causing mayhem for those of us
in full compliance with Harbor rules and
regs... I'll be standing there applauding
when the abandoned boat is towed, crushed, and
put in the dumpster and taken away. Seen
it happen many times.

The Harbor is clean and lovely and the
new mooring field is wonderfully laid out.
The few derelict vessels are west of the
drawbridge. They are the ones that look
well, derelict.

This isn't a difficult situation by any
means. But I do applaud those who are
urging all to stand up and be counted
for what is fair and what will work in
Boot Key Harbor and elsewhere.

BTW, my dear pal Capt Marti Brown's
website is idiyachts.com; the Boot Key
Harbor dot com website belongs to another
pal of mine, Gregory Absten.

Big Hugs,

Charmaine

HIghlights and underlines are mine....
Folks, this is the problem that we cruisiers get stuck with dealing
with...someone comes in, and anchors thier boat..takes off and goes
elsewhere
the boat not tended to in thier absense...and they some wonder why they get
hassled upon return or cities wish to regulate this issue..
you need to speak out not only to marathon.. but to others you see doing
this.. remind them that leaving thier boat creates problems
for the rest of us... water cops stop by a boat, no one there. for days, or
weeks... no wonder that the owner gets told to leave when
finally found...

II. Possible Trouble Brewing In Marathon, FL

My "Cruising the Florida Keys" co-author, Morgan Stinemetz, and yours truly,
have been lavish in our praise of Marathon, Florida in regards to their
highly successful effort to clean up Boot Key Harbor. Where once there were
dozens of sunken and semi-sunken vessels, sitting in water that was so
polluted you would have to have been crazy to wet your big toe, now cruisers
will find a well founded mooring field with excellent shoreside support
facilities at Marathon City Marina.

However, like many other coastal communities, *Marathon is having a problem
with the very, very small percentage of cruisers who leave their vessels
unoccupied on a mooring or at anchor for weeks or even months at a time.
*
Unfortunately, the city of Marathon has approached this problem with a set
of DRAFT regulations concerning "abandoned" vessels. The proposed language
under consideration can only be described as "ham fisted." One possible, if
ludicrous, interpretation of the draft language is that anyone leaving their
boat at all will be in violation.

Clearly, this is NOT what the powers that be in Marathon have in mind, but
while these proposed statutes are still in the draft - public comment stage,
THE CRUISING COMMUNITY NEEDS TO MAKE ITS VOICE HEARD!

We strongly urge ANY cruiser who has even a remote interest in visiting the
Florida Key's fascinating waters, to go without delay to our new, regional
sub-category page, "Marathon and Boot Key Harbor" at:

http://www.cruisersnet.net/index
php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=199&Itemid=468

Read my own, and Captain Marti's comments carefully, and please attend any
subsequent public comment or Marathon City Council meetings at which these
new regulations are the subject of discussion.

We'll do our best to keep you informed as this process goes forward!
