Pretty simple. Infernal combustion engines are noisy and they stink. One of the basic reasons to go sailing is to get a little peace and quiet, not listen to an engine. Larger battery banks, better alternators, solar panels, and longer charge cycles go a long was toward solving 12VDC power problem.
