Ed, Gina and I just ran the Okeechobee Waterway in our PDQ36 sailing catamaran and had a glorious trip. Have you tried that route? Although you are already a bit south to come north but what a beautiful run. 49 ft air draft is the limiting factor.
Not sure if you know the Ft. Myers/Cape Coral area but I was appalled at the disrespect boaters have for one another over there. Miserable few hours in an otherwise fantastic trip.
