Quote from the news item: "The 30-night and 120-night rules wouldn't affect live-aboards, or boats that serve as their owners' residence, said Maj. Paul Ouellette of the conservation commission. "Local governments already have the ability to regulate live-aboards," Ouellette said." (end) In the State of Florida, a LIVEABOARD vessel is one that is either solely a person's residence, and/or a vessel used solely for business.
Non-liveaboard vessels are those that are used in navigation (and could also be a person's residence or business). The legislation that is under proposed change is the same one that Jeb Bush rewrote to protect we NON-LIVEABOARDS (who call ourselves fulltime cruisers now). Under the guise of dealing with the problem of derelict vessels the powers that be wish to change the very statute that was changed June 2007 that serves to protect we boaters who are law-abiding citizens. If the true reason for rewriting the statute is to address the problem of derelict boats, why rewrite a statute that protects we boaters who are compliant with registration, insurance, yada yada, etc., and put us in with derelict boat owners. Did you know that boats that do not move in navigation do not have to register at all??? BINGO! Make them register! Simple to me! Make a NEW statute to address the problem of derelict vessels... NOT add to an already existing statute that has nothing to do with the derelict boat problem. The State of Florida created the derelict boat problem when they allowed those boats the right NOT TO REGISTER. Now they cry foul because they can't find the owners of boats that are derelict and not registered. Hmmm. Who is running the Asylum???? So read carefully when the designations of liveaboard and nonliveaboard are used. They are not what you may otherwise think. What YOU CAN DO: go to www.myfwc.com and under "boating" you can read the latest version (Draft 6) of the proposed statute changes. You can click on a link there to state your opinion on the matter. DO IT. And remember to state your opinion each time there is a newer draft. This way we will be heard as this is so unfair it's not even funny. We cannot let this witch hunt continue. All the Best for FAIRNESS and HONESTY because the lawmakers are NOT being honest with this one... DECEPTIVE is more like it. Charmaine Aboard s/v September Sea "Life's a Gift...
