The entire object of the rules of writing: spelling, grammar, punctuation,
general layout and design and special effects such as all-caps, italics,
bold, underlined, etc., is to facilitate the flow of thoughts from the mind
of the writer to the mind of the reader.

Poor writing makes the flow jerky with interruptions caused by the reader
trying to figure out just what the writer is trying to say.

Good writing, carefully crafted, shows respect for the reader by not forcing
him to make up for the writer's inept and/or lazy efforts at communication.

I am partial to graceful writing because it makes it easy for me to
understand the writer and a pleasure to experience.
