That was true until fairly recently but with the newer solid state 
dc-ac-dc converters,(not electrical mechanical motor-gen sets of 
yesteryear) dc transmission is possible and is being done more and more. 
In fact there is a very large capacity dc transmission line that powers 
a good deal of Manhattan.  The semiconductor device that handles the 
electrical power for the line is about the size of a pencil eraser, 
mounted on a very big active heat sink! -Ken
