We all know what an expert on all things Florida you are..... as you have told
us so, many times.
I don't think anyone, including Rosalie, said you didn't know what you are
talking about. Everyone is allowed to have an opinion, even if they disagree
with yours..... in fact before your relatively recent arrival on this list.....
it was encouraged & appreciated.

I tell people we have winter two weeks a yr, one day at a time..
front comes thru... temp drops to whatever.. say the twenties for 3 hours..
then steadily
climbes upward to mid 50's... next day it is mid 40's at night to upper 50's
next mid 50's night to upper 600's then another front comes thru.. of course
then you have those
few weeks where the cold fronts march south, hit the straits of florida, turn
around and come back
north and slam into a cold front over central florida and bingo...TORNADOS in
january..
I waas home in 2006 and we had that scenario christmas day.. by mid february it
is 80 degrees
in miami and the boat show is in full swing.. end of february the azaleas are
blooming like made
in Tampa/St Pete and we have low 70's days.. NO humidity.. that comes about mid
may.. one
night you go to sleep and the air feels like cool linen on your skin wake up to
the luxurious feel
of velvet.. the humidity as returned and gets worse and worse until late Sept..
mid October
about the time of the full moon is the first cold snap.. humidity leaves and
one has those wonderful
indian summer days of no humidity and sunny 70 degree days...
Weather that is going on in New Orleans.. usually makes the St Pete area about
48 hours laters.
Of course all one really needs to do is watch the sky.. mares tails and the
front is 24 to 48 hours out..
I wouild strongly suggest one should not be caught offshore in late December to
late february during the passing of
a cold front.. the ability to jump behind in and take advantage of the wind
though, is a great thing.. it will push you southward
in a hurry, a bit lumpy but the sailing is awesome.. Generally the average is 2
to 4 days between fronts..
NOAA will tell you a front is coming thru... what they don't say is that during
that particular time of the year getting caught offshore is not nice.. good
sailing weather all the time returns in early may.. to early december.
one very important word... in the Chessie when they say 'small craft warnings'
it simply means there is wind on the bay.. when they say 'gale force'.. just
more wind... IN the Atlantic it means something a bit more sinister.. I would
evaluate your trip plans if you get either..
In the keys the weather and water wave and all that are given as 'inside the
reef' and outside the reef. meaning the straights of fla..
heed the words.. IF you can go down the Hawk Channel it is your preferred way
to get to key west..
the Fleming Key mooring field is limited to boats 35 feet and under as I
recall.. and its not all that deep..
you can get a 6 foot draw boat on the west side of fleming key to anchor.. it
is not good but you can.. I would set two anchors and dive on them to make
double sure they are set.. watch out for the idiots that foul anchors.. we
nearly lost the C400 over someone dropping thier hook over our line and then
cutting our anchor line thinking he was cutting his.. we got back just in time
to see her within 10 feet of the rockes there.. then I had to jump off a tow
boat onto the concrete of fleming key wander thru the woods wihtout getting
caught by the shore patrol to get to the dingy.. never know how the hel I
pulled a 15 hour outboard back onboard before it almsot fell off and keep the
dink from being punctured.. but we did.. and got her safe back to the boat..
effing tourists...
fla is great.. we took the C400 with a 6 foot draft most places in central and
sw fla.. am a btdt that person on that account those are my home cruising
grounds..
