Which law is it? The only one I know about is one that says if you are a
charter or inspected vessel you must have it on, or if otherwise if you
do have it on you must listen on 16.

I DO NOT normally have mine on, for several reasons, first mostly all I
ever hear is chatter about things that have no bearing, and it runs the
battery down for no good reason and second, almost never do ships hail
me on 13 or 16. I doubt they would call even if they were about to run
me down since it seems they seldom see me.

As evidence of this last is the fact that the Coast Guard had put out a
call for sightings of my boat to be reported when somebody erronesly
called them and told them we were overdue this last spring, and although
I saw several ships no one reported me.

However, even though I was hundreds of miles out, there is a slim
possibility that I might have heard the CG call then. In the future, if
the battery power is plentiful, I may leave the radio on more often.

If I could get one that had the vessel reporting feature for a
reasonable cost, I would definitely use it much more. -Ken
