Hi, Vern,

The boat will be in the Bahamas while we return for Xmas.

Wx isn't received here in the Bahamas, so I dunno about that one
particularly.

I am a ham, and the next trick will be to try to take the antenna feed from
my M802 to this unit and see what happens. As the antenna will presumably
handle the 2m bands, I presume that would work, too.

However, I'm happy to pull it and ship it to you in about a month or so when
we get there. The mic is hardwired, so not so easy to try a swap there. If
I could find an adapter here in the third world I could also try one of the
4 handhelds we have on the antenna.

Others in other lists think it's in the preamp section, which may well be
correct. The radio, given all of our adventures, is over 3 years old so I
doubt it's under warranty. While it's a notably better unit than the one at
the helm, it wasn't all that expensive - and since I went to the expense and
bother to get and install a WHAM for it, I'm sorta stuck with using that one
or its siblings if I have to replace it.

Which made me think for a bit; perhaps it would be useful to have the same
at the helm, so that the wham would work with it, too, allowing roaming
around the boat and even perhaps as a repeater if we're nearby on another
boat or something, for intercom purposes.

Thanks for the thought provokers and I'll try the SSB antenna (which is a
whip on the stern - RX isn't dependent on the tuner, so I could have some
other boat try me on a schedule; I assume the tuner wouldn't know what to do
with the tiny signal from a handheld :{)) - but, maybe not correct, and it
would tune up so tx would also be strong if it hears ok. It's an SGC230...
