Hi, I have been reading up on the Federal tax laws. (I know, I know... I need to get a life!) But this could help someone get some money they are entitled to.
Anyway there are provisions in the new home buyers act signed a couple weeks ago that allow a credit for first time - as well as repeat homebuyers (including some boat buyers). The repeat homebuyers must that have lived in a principal residence for 5 of the last 8 years. The law includes boat purchases, and gives 10% CREDIT for $80,000 of sale price or $65,000 of sale price respectively on a boat to be used as a principal residence. The Government gives a refundable federal tax credit if you buy a new principle residence. The new principal residence can be a traditional home or a boat. The requirement is that it has to be your principal residence for the next three years and purchase price cannot be more than $800,000. That includes a lot of the population. This will cost the US Treasury at least 11 Billion Dollars. This will not affect me, but if a person on the list can find a way to use this gift, I am glad to have helped alert them to it. The law has conditions, a joint income limit mentions limits which starts at $225,000 for a husband and wife. You should check with your tax advisor for advice. But if you want to buy a principal residence (including a boat) to get an $8,000 or $6,500 gift from the IRS by filing for the credit it's out there. The lesser amount of $6500 refundable credit is for those who are repeat buyers, who have owned a principal residence for 5 of the last 8 years. The law has been extended through the Spring of 2010. To keep the credit you have to use your new purchase as your 'principal residence' for the next three years.
