Invest in an inexpensive VHF watt meter/SWR bridge.  That way you'll be 
able to tell if and when you have antenna or feedline problems.  I have 
the MFJ-862.  It's a VHF/UHF meter designed for amateur frequencies, but 
it works fine on the marine band. I like it because it has a 30 watt 
setting which is ideal for our 25 watt marine radios.  It's about $65 
from Universal Radio.  MFJ isn't my favorite company.  Some have 
suggested that MFJ stands for "mighty fine junk".  However I have a 
couple of MFJ SWR bridges and they work just fine.
