If you can find a GSM phone in the US that is either unlocked or for
which you can get an unlock code you can simply buy a SIM card from
Batelco. AT&T was happy to give me the unlock code for my old V3 RAZR
(I use an iPhone now). Batelco activated an account for $10 for which
I can buy pre-paid phone cards. That has worked quite well for me.

If you don't invest in serious long-range wifi gear you will find
yourself dinghying in somewhere for Internet connections. Even with a
small Alfa external USB wifi adapter I don't get anything like the
range Skip reports.

I am a serious Internet addict and haven't been much inconvenienced
getting my fix throughout the Abacos and Exumas, almost all free. I
have engaged in a little social engineering to get connected in a few
places. I did have to pay for a connection in Nassau while holed up
there waiting for my girl friend to fly in and for the weather to
settle to get out.
