I have seen for sale UV sterilizers that one can plumb into piping. 
Reverse Osmosis equipment places sell them to sterilize the output of RO
machines.

While on the thread of water sterilization, I recall that iodine is the
stuff we should use to keep our tank water sterile (because chlorine
evaporates out of the water if it is not under pressure).  Does anyone
remember the details of just what sort of iodine we should use and how much?
