I should have added:

I built a welded aluminum box from 3/16" plate to house our two-burner
stove.  There are bits of aluminum angle on the counter top to keep the
affair from sliding yet make it easy to remove for cleaning.

There a piece of 18 gauge ss sheet metal on the bulkhead behind the stove. 
There is a hood and exhaust fan above the stove.  There is a ball valve
nearby to shut down the gas supply when removing the stove for cleaning.
