There have been a number of reputed incidents of trawlers being snagged by submarines. Particularly in the Irish Sea with subs going to or from Faslane or Holy Loch. It's hard to see how such accidents could be avoided - given the nature of nuclear submarine missions. Unfortunately it's also very hard for those who are victims to seek compensation. The Navy is loathe to admit that a unit was in a certain place, on a certain course, at a certain speed, at a particular time. Therefore the event is recorded as a mysterious incident that leaves a bitter taste in the mouth of survivors or relatives.

I believe There was some controversy about it being caused by an "unnecessary" emergency surfacing. Nothing comes to mind with regard to WWII but that seems unlikely given numbers of ships and boats involved. Perhaps reporting not as good or covered by press blackouts at the time. As for your other comments concerning submarine warfare in WWII, I find most ring a bell that I have seen, read or otherwise studied over the years. I have seem some pictures of yachts and container ships damaged by what was thought to he floating debris. "It is well that war is so terrible ... lest we should grow too fond of it." - Robert E.
