A4 (440Hz) is the reference frequency for many samples, as well as being the 
standard tuning frequency for a lot of instruments.  It's also somewhat 
traditional - saying "why don't we change the default frequency to C" is like 
saying "why don't we change the treble clef to C".

I don't mind, and I don't think it's going to make a huge difference, but I 
have to admit as a user of many music programs over the years if I found one 
that had its default keyboard frequency setting at anything other than A4 I'd 
think it was written by someone that didn't really understand the music world. 
  But that's just my opinion.
