Why would autosave cause so much troubles? It doesn't for me. Autosave is as simple as saving a file called project.mmpz.bak now and then if I am right? Uros lost his work because he didn't save... not sure if he had enabled autosave and I don't really know if it works. On the next startup the program will ask if you want to open autosave and then removes the .bak?
