Since we're talking about build instructions, could we amend them wrt.
the target directory? I don't think making a "target" directory under
the user's home directory is a very good practice. It makes the software
only usable for one user, and the home directory should not be used for
executable files (apart from maybe the user's personal scripts).
The common and recommended practice AFAIK is to use the /opt directory
for all alternate versions of software that usually are housed under /usr.
Personally I think the best practice is to have the stable version under
/usr, and the development builds under different subdirectories in /opt.
