What's the alternative if we always want to be able to easily integrate the latest upstream changes? It's been lots of work to manually apply the LMMS-specific patches to the current ZASF master branch. What we can do now is to simply merge upstream/master without losing our changes. If we have an independent copy somewhere in our source tree to my experience it's a mess to pull in upstream changes.
Besides this there's nothing stopping us from adding the git submodules commands to the global CMakeLists.txt so it get executed automatically.
