I had this wacky idea once, of a synth based on images. You'd load a
bitmap image to the synth, and it would be converted into a
single-channel (monochrome) matrix, which would act sort of like a drum
membrane, with the values at each coordinate indicating the variations
in tension... Then you could adjust other parameters, like the position
of the hit, velocity, etc.

You could then basically make different percussive instruments by
drawing things in a graphics editor: draw a radial gradient for a tom,
add some visual noise for a snare drum... or draw some random stuff to
create weird new sounds.
