shortanswer of it all, LMMS uses libsoundfile for audio files and also uses liboss.
It is true, that you probably want to use a soundcard with hardware mixing, or use dmix, plug, whatever it is. Did you compile LMMS yourself? Are you sure the configuration said it found everything you would like to use?
