I can think of 2 things that you could work on:

1.  Overcome the existing inertia and get Log4j-2.0 started.  Without someone to
 kick-start this, I don't believe it will ever happen.  Log4j-1.3 seems to be
somewhat of a dead-end and if the Log4j project is to move forward past
maintenance releases of Log4j-1.2.xx, the 2.0 plan needs to get laid out and
started.  Once it is there, I think the developer support will come with it.

2.  Enhance Chainsaw.  There have been a number of recent threads discussing
possible changes to Chainsaw to make it more usable and add new functionality. 
It's a great little app right now, though it could use some polishing.  Adding
tailing capabilities to the VFS log receiver would be excellent!
