That's indeed an interesting topic. At our company we usually provide patch 
releases for older minor releases, if they have explicitly been requested. But 
that's relatively easy to manage for an in-house platform. For a public project 
like Log4j2 it's certainly more complicated. 

I think blocker bugs should always be fixed in at least the latest 2 minor 
releases. Minor fixes should at least be applied to the previous release, too.
