Renaud,
I used to use the FileAppender, and tailf it with "follow"

Now, I use "chainsaw" : free, nice, simple.
(http://www.geocities.com/oburn/chainsaw/)
As "chainsaw" splits the different elements of the LoggingEvent in separate columns,
layout is not important.
