As Jake mentioned, log4j v1.3 is going to be distributed as multiple jars.
The "core" jar sise will be reduced in size as Chainsaw and LF5 will be
moved to a "client" jar.  So, it will help.

But the point made in one of the follow up comments (ie the dependency on
jdk 1.4 for util.logging) is still very valid.  In my own work, I am finding
that official support for the 1.4 jdk is still spotty, especially from the
tool makers.  This surprises me, and I'm sure they will catch up eventually.
But using log4j allows for more flexibility from that perspective.
