Ivan's solution works: set auto_globals_jit = Off in php.ini
I run Centos Linux 2.6 / PHP 5.3.10
I was trying to access the X-Forwarded-For (I run on AWS behind the ELB) ...
incidentally use %server{{HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR} to do this
