The background process is only needed if you want to log via DBMS_PIPE, which is then read by the Java background process and logged through Log4J.  If you don't need that log path, you don't need the background process.

I'm just about to start evaluating log4plsql. The DBAs are refusing to install it unless I tell them what the background process does and why it has to be left running.

 

The script runs the following

 

. ./setVariable.sh

cd $LOG4PLSQL_HOME

echo start listener

java log4plsql.backgroundProcess.Run ./properties/log4plsql.xml

 

 

Does anyone either know what this does, or know where the relevant documentation is.
