Microsoft are actually pretty cool where Perl is concerned - I think they
paid Active State[1] to port it to win32, so they realise its importance.

There's an English guy called Andrew Clinic[2] there who came up with a nice
phrase - "regular expressions are to strings as maths is to numbers". Don't
know if that's true but it sounds good.

Jon

[1] am i right in remembering that they used to be called 'hip perl'?
[2] used to be one of their "internet evangelists" in the UK, which resulted
in much sniggering at conferences when they introduced themselves.

Check out:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/library/resources/reskit/rktour/pro/pro
_tools.asp
to see a list of the things in the Win2Kpro resource kit - including this
useful gem:

Activeperl.exe
Active Perl Scripting Language
C-like scripting language ported from UNIX to Windows 2000.

Sounds a bit like an Alastair Campbell style version of reality...

Andrew.
