There's a reason I've been tossing around the word "instrumental". :)

The Beach Boys are probably more accurately described as "Beach Music".
Dick Dale is, practically by definition, surf music (although some of
his later work is questionable in this respect).  Miserlou is probably
the best tune to use as an example of instrumental surf, since it's
popular because of its use in Pulp Fiction.

There are certainly some blurry lines here, but Miserlou, Pipeline, and
the like aren't any of them.
