The man is trying to change the world for the better. He hasn't succeeded, but at least his code works as advertised. You can easily set it up so that binaries are in /usr/local/bin and the configs are in /etc and you can mirror the web pages when you grab the software so you always have the right version. Unfortunately I think his his pseudo-license prevents folks like debian from doing so on your behalf. Ooh - I just looked and now he distributes a "documentation package" which you're supposed to unpack under... you've guessed it... /doc ! His reasons: http://cr.yp.to/compatibility.html - but I'm in two minds. All freebsd systems are the same, because there is only one "distribution". This is good because you can write software or instructions and say "this works for freebsd" with confidence that it will work for everyone. Targeting linux is a pain because there are many distributions, so everyone ends up targeting RedHat. Having everything the same is good, so long as you can find a way to curb mediocrity. If Americans and British spelled their words the same way and used the same sized paper then the world would be a slightly more efficient place. However, if any of this stops you from being able to apt-get install foobaa then forget it. <disclaimer>I might still be drunk</disclaimer>
